Why Dennis Baker is fundraising for clean water

Voyager Academy High School will be holding their first ever "Water Walk" on Friday, Nov. 20. In the developing world, it is not uncommon for people to have to walk over a half an hour to get to a water source. There, they will fill up containers with dirty water they know will make them sick, and then have to walk all the way back home carrying the heavy load of the dirty water. Many families have to make this journey multiple times a day. Many children do not attend school because their family needs them for these daily water runs.

To both raise awareness of this issue, and funds to help create solutions, Voyager students and faculty will be holding a Water Walk on Friday, Nov. 20. They will work in teams to walk around the school during lunchtime for 30 minutes with 40 lbs of weight--a similar amount of time and a similar load carried by people in the developing world on their daily treks for water.

Would you Join our Team? Would you participate in our Water Walk, and invite everyone you know to sponsor you $1, $2, $5, or some other amount for every minute you and your team does the Water Walk?

If you cannot do the Water Walk and recruit a team of sponsors, would you consider sponsoring our walk yourself? You can give a certain amount for every minute we walk, or you can simply donate any amount you would like. $6,000-$10,000 on average will create a clean water source for a whole community in the developing world. At Voyager, we want to help. Join us!

Below is more information about the water crisis from Charity: Water:

663 million people on this planet don’t have access to clean water. That’s 1 in 11 of us!

That means 1 out of 11 people in our world is drinking water that comes from a river, lake or muddy hole in the ground every day. Dirty, contaminated water that has leeches and debris in it. Water that causes disease, keeps kids out of school and takes hours to bring back home.

What’s NOT crazy is doing something to help. I joined charity: water’s September Campaign this year because I believe that every person on the planet deserves clean water, and I’m looking for anyone who can help me.

100% of the money will be used to build clean water projects for people in need, and when they’re complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped.

You can give a little or you can give a lot. The craziest thing we can do is nothing.
